New Year Prize for Phil

A good turnout of 15 people greeted the first event of the new year at Windaroo Lakes. Frequent visitor Cohen Blanchette became a new member while Gary Skeen also returned to visit us. The sponsor eventually arrived to inform us we were playing stableford for the front nine, then stroke to finish off. Good weather prevailed, with the heat staying away until we were finished.

It was worth the visit for Gary Skeen who’s score of 15 was enough to win the runner up prize. But the big prize of the day went to Phil Dacey, returning a 13. It’s good to see both the placegetters beating their handicaps for a change.

Possibly because of the larger field, all the pin shots were won. Noel Gilby was nearest on the 5th, Tony Mraz best on the 7th, visitor Gary Skeen got the 11th while the 15th went to captain George Young. Longest drive on 8 was won by Tony Armbruster.

The treasurer collected some memberships, with not many left outstanding. He’ll begin glaring at people starting in February, so don’t panic yet. Next game is in two weeks’ time on January 22. That’s a 6am tee-off at the near neighbour course of Mount Warren Park.

Eric Finishes the Year

Good weather greeted the field of 12 at Gailes for the last game of the year. The course still had the 3rd and 5th holes under renovation, so short par threes 7A and 7B were in play, making five pin shots available. The sponsor selected stroke as the format, and unusually the treasurer was placed in the last group. Coming down the 18th hole, the treasurer decided to put on a bar tab, so the good news was phoned ahead to the groups already there.

Two players returned 68 net some four under the modified par, with Eric Brunovs winning the countback from Tony Armbruster. All five pin shots were won, with the 6th and 17th going to our runner-up, 7A going to our winner, 7B going to Allan Gillam and Ricky Ong getting nearest on 12. Longest drive went to captain George Young, passing a very impressive attempt from Ricky.

After the game, the AGM was held. The treasurer’s report was presented, and most appreciated the bar tab as an attempt to get the profits down. No personnel change occurred, so the committee is the same as last year. The proposed calendar for the 2023 year was shown, with some tweaks finalising the trophy donors. It’s been transcribed to the website here but let me know if there’s any typos.

Next game is next year. First game of 2023 is January 8 with a 6:54 tee-off at Windaroo Lakes.
