Glades Worth the Drive for Sponsor Allan

Fifteen people hauled the enormous distance to the incredibly early start at the Glades course for our annual Gold Coast get-together. Trophy sponsor Allan Gillam chose the stroke format, to challenge us all on this difficult layout.

Pleasant spring weather combined with good course conditions should have resulted in better scores, but only a few beat their handicaps. Top of the list was our Sponsor Allan Gillam, who kept his prize with his 69 net. Runner up was Eric Brunovs on 71, who’s also placed in a few other recent games.

Pin shots went to Allan Gillam, Matt Hogan, Mick van Bemmel and Ian van der Hoeven. Longest drive also went to Matt Hogan.

We all enjoyed the lunch deal after the game, as we discussed the morning’s endeavours in the gentle midday breeze.

Next week we’re supposed to be at Gailes at 6am. Hopefully, we’ll hold the Annual General Meeting there too. So if you’ve got any policy you want discussed, this is your forum.

Defenders Step-up at McLeod Swansong

Summer had arrived, promising a warm day at McLeod. Thirteen people arrived for the Mal Curnow memorial four-ball, where the defending champions again team up and chose stableford as the format.

Thirteen is possibly the worst field-size for a four-ball competition, so it ended up with a lone-pair leading the field, followed by a three with the man in the middle being David Cunneen. His team-up with Scott Porter produced a strong 47 points, which would have looked to be enough, before the defenders returned the same score. A meticulous count-back declared the win going to the defending pair of Tony Armbruster and Secretary Mick van Bemmel.

Pin shots went to Eric Brunovs on the 2nd, Troy van der Haar on the 6th, Scott Porter on the 12th, Steve Gifkins on the 16th, with no-one getting on the difficult 18th. Longest drive went to Tony Armbruster.

Also on this day,  Ian van der Hoeven and Troy van der Haar contested the A-grade putting play-off, with Ian emerging victorious.

The Secretary hasn’t booked us on this course for next year, so he leaves it with good memories after this win.

Next week is the Annual presentation BBQ, starting 11am at the same venue as last year. Contact someone on the committee if you need the details. This is a week earlier than printed on the draws, since the date was moved to avoid a scheduling clash.

A fortnight after that is the annual Gold Coast game at Glades. It costs $60 per player which includes a cart-seat, so look forward to that.
