Soppy Play at Gailes

Thirteen people fronted for the Treasurer’s trophy event at Gailes. Visitor Chris Haire boosted the numbers, and we welcomed David Cunneen who signed up as our newest member. Immaculate weather greeted the field, which was a contrast to the overnight soaking which was still evident in the leveller fairways and the heavy sand bunkers.

Scores were therefore suppressed, with only our winner beating par. Newest member David Cunneen nosed in under par with a net 72, with Matt Hogan’s 74 giving him runner-up for the second week in a row.

Our place-getters also each bagged a pin-shot, with the rest going to Tony Armbruster and Scott Porter. Longest drive went to David Brain.

This round is the last round of the year’s putting contest, and once the captain has collated the results I’ll post them here. Next game is a Stableford at Carbrook in two-week’s time.

Obfuscation at Oxley

Fifteen people arrived for this Stableford Event at Oxley, bolstered by visitors Chris Hogan and Chris Haire. The warmer conditions hinted at an early spring, and as we set out, some of us were confused by the double-index feature of the Oxley scorecard.

Indeed at the halfway mark, some in our group decided that scorecard corrections would have to be made at the clubhouse before handing them in. Such corrections added some extra strokes to the card of Dave Brain, giving him 39 points for the win.  I was in his group, and attribute his results to consistently holing those middle-distance putts that kept slipping by for me. Runner up with 36 was special guest star Matt Hogan, at only his second appearance this year.

Two pin shots went to Ian van der Hoeven, with the rest going to our winners Dave Brain, and Matt Hogan. Longest drive went to Blair George – this third such in recent times.

Next game is next Sunday, 7am at Gailes. This treasurer’s trophy event is the last round of the putting competition, so if you have one really bad round you need to eliminate, this is for you!

Daylight comes second at Carbrook

Twelve people fronted Carbrook for the Matthew Hogan trophy, played as a Plus or Minus. Perfect conditions presented, that should lead to some solid scoring.

Four weeks ago at Nudgee, the field was streeted by six strokes. Today it happened again, with Tony Armbruster besting the field by seven with his +8. Daylight came second, with Eric Brunovs at +1 the best of the rest. We always suspected that Tony would be dangerous if he could put his considerable length off the tee onto the correct fairway, and today it happened! Not enough to beat Blair George for the longest-drive on the 13th, though.

Last outing on this course, none of the pinshots were won. This time half of them went off with the 7th going to Noel Gilby, and 11th to Steven Friedrichs. Perhaps the 2nd hole was too early in the round, and the 14th, too late?

There’s a three-week gap to the next game at Oxley, a Stableford, which gives ample time for the handicapper to cull Tony’s handicap from its current 21 to somewhere where he won’t get any 2-stroke holes anymore.

As promised from last week, I’ve got the results from the Championships: A-grade was won by Ian van der Hoeven, with B-grade going to Blair George. I’ve also got the seedings for the matchplay. Ideally first plays fourth, and second plays third in the semi-finals, but we have reserves in case someone in the first four can’t make it on that particular day.

A-Grade: 1. Chris Young, 2. Ian van der Hoeven, 3. Tony Armbruster, 4. Dennis Hogan, 5. Allan Gillam, 6. Steve Gifkins.

B-Grade: 1. Ray Bugg, 2. Blair George, 3. Eric Brunovs, 4. Mick van Bemmel, 5. Noel Gilby, 6. Steven Friedrichs.

Matchplay begins 27 September at Gailes.
